There are lots of different fields in the hacking world, but since you're posting in the Application forums, I think you ought to know that the 2 most basic programs needed with app cracking, are a Hex Editor and a basic Debugger. A very popular debugger is OllyDbg; you'll find it with google. Then you need to Google ASM, assembly language, or else you won't understand OllyDbg at all. There are lots of Hex Editors on the web, just Google for one. I use Hex Workshop myself, but there are lots of others. The basic conclusion in this post, is that you have to Google a lot. Search for tutorials about hex stuff or asm. When you know what you're talking about, then it's time to ask for more specific help.

If he is a newbie 010 Editor might be less intimidating in terms of user interface.

If you really want to learn about cracking apps you should first read a ASM tutorial - http://www.laynetworks.com/assembly%20tutorials.htm

Then you should read a nice cracking tutorial.
I found a nice one that helped me - http://www.woodmann.com/crackz/Tutorials/Flores1.htm (This one is a little old and has old tools, so you better use OllyDbg instead of SoftIce) But if you don't like it you can go ahead and find one that you think is better.

And remember you can't just learn about cracking in one day.

Hacking is not taught. You can't "learn to hack".

For your app question, I use Hex Workshop. It's a good program.

Yep, you just wake up one day and know how to "hack".

I suppose you can teach someone, but it's way easier if you reference and teach yourself. It's always better to teach yourself because people think and learn things differently...

Really??..
Really??..

You can't learn to hack??
Really??..

Why don't you re-evaluate everything that you've
ever learned in your life.. Because it's all wrong.

Hey guys, are we incapable of lasting a single month without insulting each other?
I agree that hacking is a very difficult subject to teach someone else, the best method is to read all you can and teach yourself. Of course you'll encounter problems, but thats what sites like this are for aren't they? Helping each other out
