Question about IP addresses

When you ping a website, it gives you an ip address, when you trace that IP it gives you a location. What does that location mean? Is it where the website was uploaded from? Maybe where it was last updated from?

You mean a physical address? Usually the company who overseas that box is the address that'll pop up.. It's a little different for websites and normal users IP's. Our IP's will trace back to our ISP and stop there. Then internally they can trace back to us. But for websites, people can put their company address on whois info, or it can be the address of the hosting company.

So when I ping HTS, I get a reply from the address 198.148.81.138. I went to a website that traces IP addresses and it told me that it was coming from a place in Idaho, you think that's where the hosting company is? Thanks for helping me, I'm just starting out.

Hrmm Idaho? No that's not. I'm honestly not sure why that pops up. It could be the site you used to track it was off.
Either way, unless I'm mistaken, HTS utilizes one of those fancy privacy dohickers that keeps all that good info off a whois.

Well I checked some other websites that trace IPs and it gave me the same place so I don't think that's it, but when i looked from the satellite view it was in the middle of a forest so maybe they are hiding it and it just gives the website a random location.

I'm pretty sure the IP just happens to come from a range that is known to be from that area.
