Have you ever received a phone call like this?

I just got a call, and the caller ID read:

Unknown Name
000-000-0000

Of course, this prompted me to do some research, and I found this: link

Obviously it's a spoofed number, and I just happened to be one of the people that was dialed, but that begs the question of why? I brought this here, because I'm sure this community can provide some more concrete answers than some of the CIA conspiracies I read on the above link. Thanks in advance for any input.

For me that number is normally "The Captain speaking" and they try and give you a "free" trip somewhere. The call usually starts with a horn blast like from a ship.

LOL! I got "The Captain" one a long, long, time ago. It was from a different number I believe. On this one however, I was one of the lucky recipients of total silence. Still, the telemarketing thing does make sense. Though, the tea party comments on that site made me wonder.

I believe this was called from an internet phone magic jack or something along those lines, at least I think thats what it is...

Nah, I'm pretty sure those would put something as the caller ID.

I've received stuff like that before, the captain one was sorta amusing,made up for the fact that it was a probably a scam.

Magic jacks actually have unique numbers and Caller IDs.

That is unless someone hacked the firmware and altered it somehow, not to mention get it through the rest of the system without getting caught.

It appears to me as one of the thousands of telemarketers. Just try checking on your call logs online though.
