If you want to do the hack test, I recommend learning Javascript. You do not buy it nor do you buy fire bug. Firebug just lets you view code easy man. Same as with Google chrome (its an internet browser such as fire fox) you just right click and hit inspect element. As well I would download the firebug extension for Google chrome. Learning javascript and fully understanding it could take a long time, seemsing how code can change. Just get down the basics. If you can understand xhtml, java script makes pretty much decent sense.

To get further in the hack test I recommend using Google chrome, and learning a little about javascript.

Not to ruin the fun or anything, I still recommend doing the hack tests. They are well worth it, but if you just change the url at the top of the page from saying you are on the 4 to a 10 you can get to the end like that. Although you have really truly accomplished nothing that way.
