Proofs are tedious, and painful at first, but they also let you get a firm grip on what is truly going on with something. If you truly think you understand something but can't prove the result then most likely there's a key element you are missing. I know this from lots of experience.

It's all to do with your thinking. If you like logic, you like maths - and you likely like programming because programming is simply giving the computer logical things to do.
