Alice: I am insane.
Bob: I am pure.
Charlie: I am applied.
Dorothy: I am sane.
Alice: Charlie is pure.
Bob: Dorothy is insane.
Charlie: Bob is applied.
Dorothy: Charlie is sane.

You are also given that:

* Pure mathematicians tell the truth about their beliefs.
* Applied mathematicians lie about their beliefs.
* Sane mathematicians beliefs are correct.
* Insane mathematicians beliefs are incorrect.

Describe the four mathematicians.

Who can get it first?

I got two different solutions.
1: Alice is applied, Bob is pure, Charlie is insane, Dorothy is insane
2: Alice is applied, Bob is insane, Charlie is insane, Dorothy is applied

I may have misunderstood the question.....The term "beliefs" wasn't all that clear to me, but from what i gathered, is it not a contradiction for any of them to say "i am applied". If the were applied they would lie and say they were pure, and if they were pure they would be truthful. So regardless of which they were they would say they were pure.

If this is way off then please clarify the meaning of "beliefs". I took it to mean that pure/applied related to statements made about themselves, while sane/insane related to statements made about others.

I don't understand. The questions seems to me like it implies mathematicians can be BOTH insane/sane and pure/applied. If they were insane and applied, they would be wrong about their idea but would also be lying, resulting in what they say being true. I'm probably wrong though.

Each is either:
1. Pure and sane
2. Pure and insane
3. Applied and sane
4. Applied and insane

I believe this is it:

- Alice is insane and applied.
- Charlie is insane and pure.
- Bob is sane and pure.
- Dorothy is insane and pure.

That's assuming that they are, in fact, mathematicians

and that they don't all have to be different.
