For some reason I did this one under 2 minutes. Sometimes I surprise myself. Google is your friend with many tools for unencrypting hash.

Hint on FINDING the hash:
The NEWS page is quite useful. Just have a close look on what it says there.

For those using linux and stuck on the tool:

Install wine:
http://www.iexplo1t.com/2014/11/Wine.html

One option to use (which may or may not work  )
http://c3rb3r.openwall.net/mdcrack/

You can: wine command...

If you are using Linux, I recommend using JTR or Hashcat. You don't have to use wine to run any proprietary software for this challenge. Also, that program has not been updated since 2007.

check the news, that'll give you a hint on both parts of the website and why infoSec is important. Then look up some things about how some of the things described there work.
(Yes, I know, pointing towards the news section specifically is technically a spoiler, but come on...)

You are quoting a post from 2009, odds are they either found it by now, or moved on. Check the dates before replying :p

so I got Cain&Abel running, got the hash, figured out the type by looking at the hash, but now I have a hash that is way too long for its type. I think I'm getting a little stuck here.

UPDATE:
I have found a program that can properly display the hash as hex, however, there are 726 hexes in there of the length I need. now I know some of these are scripting code, but how do I know which single one of the hexes decodes to the actual password?

UPDATE:
nevermind. amazing how long one can be in the wrong direction.

Can someone tell me a decent hash cracker. C&B won't download to my computer because of the security risk and they have stopped the support for it anyways. Please tell me hash cracker or PM if you have one and I can send you my # if you could crack it for me.

I tried hashcat and it it just won't work on my 32bits windows. rainbowcrack doesn't display the option to select and add the hash.

A hint on getting the hash. - 32-bit hashcat

That you can't run hashcat is very unfortunate, you could try using JTR, but I find that it is difficult to get it to behave the way you want.

http://www.openwall.com/john/

back to hashcat, make sure you are using the hashcat-cli32.exe and not anything else. if you try using the 64-bit version, nothing will work.

I hope that works for you...
If it doesn't, try to get a linux distribution, you can download them for free usually, and can then be installed from a USB or similar. There are plenty of guides on the internet about doing this. Linux distros take some getting used to, but runs much smoother with hashcat than any other OS.

EDIT:
also, feel free to PM me the hash if you still can't get anything to work for you.
