That's supposed to happen. You need to figure out what the hash type actually is.
Then when using JTR pass along the --format option

I spent 3 days trying to bruteforce the hash before I realized that maybe I needed to know what hashing Al-Goreithm was used, and decided to get information that your typical google crawler couldn't. You know, sometimes Google indexes websites, but it stays the hell away from that scary robo-cop because it didn't like the text it was getting. Without that cop, you might have found out about that one library across the street from your house because he disallowed that information from being given due to those terrorist hackers going in and looking at source code and stuff. Anyway, I finally figured it out and asked my friend from Madrid if she could loan me a few dollars :?: , she gave me a quarter of what I asked for  , but luckily a dollar was enough to buy the icecream I wanted :D . Then, while I was eating my icecream I dropped it on my computer  . I wiped it off and decide to use a botnet I had made earlier for that purpose :ugeek: (A.K.A. I googled that shit)

Just kidding you stupid shit, figure it out yourself

Man, this was a good one. All the challenges have been enjoyable but this was a load of fun. Felt like such an idiot when I finally (after like half an hour of staring and swearing) worked out where the hash was.

Kudos to the designer.

Actually, without even knowing it, you already reached port 80. That's the port (HTTP) in addition to port 443 (HTTPS) that's used for most if not all websites you see on the Internet. What do you really mean by getting 'through port 80'?

Look at the right file and you know why people would want to use it.

Clearly, from other people's comments, you're supposed to do this challenge using a hash cracking program like hashcat or JTR. Is there a way to do it using a "pass the hash" attack, though?

Nope, read up on how that one works. It will only work on specific servers/services and using specific techniques, but it's good you've read and learnt about it. It's a pretty useful technique for those few situations where it can be used.
