What is Ethics?

There are so many codes of ethics out there. One person's ethics are probably unethical to another person. So really, on the whole, what is ethics?

Read about Plato and ethics.
Ah, when to the heart of man
Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept the end
Of a love or a season?

Read about Plato and ethics.

I've read almost every book by Plato. Ethics included.

Ethics are like stereotypes. Namely it's a general consensus of what most people believe and think.

I'm with Ninjex on this one, ethics is what you get when you add all people's opinions of a certain demographic (like say a country) together and form a consensus based on that. The difference you're talking about is not ethics, but morality or moral compass. The way a person reacts to different situations and what he/she finds acceptable is determined by that and might or might not be ethical. Whenever whether something is ethical or not isn't clear, that gray area is debatable. Throughout history, between cultures and between nations what is deemed ethical has changed. Compare it with the law, some people don't agree with it, it varies per issue and case, it changes over time and between cultures, but some basic principles are usually universally accepted.

Take this example: (everyone is welcome to join in)
"You're in charge of a small programming team in a big organisation, Your boss calls you up on Christmas eve with some bad news. The company has no need for your small team any more and a reshuffle is happening. You boss lets you know the they are going to move you to another sector of your company, And the two lead programmers are moving also. However they don't have room for your team's Quality Assurance Lead Frank, so he will have to be let go. Would you please be able to call him as soon as possible and let him know that he will be laid off early next year."
It's Christmas eve do you want to be the bearer of bad news and tell Frank today? or will you wait a few days to tell him after Christmas?

Here's an example lacking "ethics":

Interesting case and a good example of what people expect you should do (e.g. the generality of ethics).

Haha I was hoping people would answer the question of whether they would tell him or not :P

I don't see the benefit of not telling him.
