Just for future reference, in case you didn't know. Before digging into any hardware underneath the chassis, I'd recommend running memtest86+ for a little while to check for any RAM error for this type of problem, or scan the drive for any bad sectors, or going to your BIOS and change your harddrive controller option to "Compatability / IDE" mode as previously stated. Memtest86 doesn't require any standalone OS so you can run it off of any type of bootable storage, and it'll correct any found errors for you.
