i'm trying to draw up plans for a briefcase computer and i had an idea is there a way to run a desktop motherboard on a laptop power supply and if so how would i go about doing that

Im not sure if you can without modifing the battery itself. Try taking apart a laptop and see how the battery is connected to everything.

And why would you want a desktop motherboard in a briefcase?

there's no way you're going to be fitting an ATX form factor board in a briefcase unless you want a very noticeable briefcase. you're going to want to look in the realm of mini-itx, and similar form factors. actually, something i just thought of would be the VIA AMOS-3000 which would probably fit nicely in a briefcase.

i think you're going to have a hard time running it off a laptop power supply, because those are usually 90-180watts i think?

anyway, id look into any low profile system components, (aka low profile heat sink, power supply and graphics card if the graphics isnt already onboard)

that would probably be you're best bet (however you would need a BEEFY battery if you wanted to run it off battery power if not no battery)

otherwise i would stick to laptop components

get a laptop motherboard, maybe a better screen than the laptop had

and you would be pretty good to go

i"m not wanting to run it off battery i just thought that a laptop power supply would be alot smaller, my whole reason for doing this is that it would be better than a laptop and it just be cool

Get a dell hybrid, get a power source, get some of the external stuff and you will have quite a heavy briefcase.

I just had an idea, you could use one of those infer red keypads that you can just attach with a usb and and small plug in mouse, that would save you alot of room.
