software protection?

I would like to know what is the best way to protect my computer.
I have recently had a bit of trouble with viruses.
I have a couple of different anti-virus programs downloaded, but they do not seem to be working to well. If known, can someone please tell me some really good, strong anti-virus and anti-spyware that I can download?

AVG or Windows Defender. Also AOL McAffee is pretty good. if you get it free of course.
The glass is neither half-full nor half-empty; it's merely twice as big as it needs to be.
