Server as personal pc

I'm contemplating getting a lenovo think server and installing a small ssd to use it for basic tasks and eventually upgrading the graphics card for some mild gaming. I will be installing Ubuntu onto the ssd and I might also purchase a chromebook, to put Ubuntu on as well for my on the go computing needs.

Thoughts?

Not to discredit your idea, but why? What's the benefit?

You should post the specific model think server you're looking at so we can give you better advice. If you went with a blade style server, be aware you won't have the room to add a GPU. If you're talking about a tower style computer, those are pretty much OS-less and GPU-less pre-builts, so again, what's the point?

Lenovo ThinkServer TS140 70A4000HUX i3-4130 3.4GHz Server Desktop Computer

this is the server I am thinking of getting , to do the mods on it seems just basically like a cheap tower to me

I found the ThinkServer on Newegg for $379.99 and priced it out with the highest rated comparable components for $366.95.

  1. Intel Core i3-4130 - $129.99
  2. Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3 - $86.99
  3. G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) - $49.99
  4. SeaSonic SS-300ET Bronze 300W - $39.99
  5. Antec Three Hundred - $59.99

If cost is an issue, I'm sure cheaper parts could lower it to ~$315.
I always think it is a better idea to build rather than buy, the ThinkServer doesn't seem to have any advantage over building it yourself.

Thanks, That makes sense. I would need to get a tower case too, I have just never built a computer from the ground up. So I was partially getting the server to ease into building a pc , also for the roomy case. I found it on Amazon for 260

Check my previous post, I included a case, the Antec Three Hundred for $60. It's a pretty well rated case and also what I have personally. If you have something similar to a MircoCenter computer store near you, I've seen them as cheap as $40, which is how much I paid for mine.

Building a computer is much easier than you probably think it is. If it's something you're interested in, check out r/buildapc for some really good information.

Your right im just going to go for the build, heres what ive found so far

corsair builder series cx 430 watt atx/eps 80 plus
evga geforce 8400 gs 1 gb ddr3 pci express 2.0 graphics card
asus m5a97 r2.0 am3+ amd 970 sata 6gb/s usb 3.0 atx amd motherboard
optiarc sata dvd rw burner drive
startech 7.1 channel pci digital sound adapter car
amd fx-6300 6-core processor
wd blue 1 tb desktop hard drive 7200rpm, sata 6gb/s, 64 mb cache

to me that seems like it would be a good build for general purposes and some lite gaming
