I was reading "BackTrack 5 Wireless Penetration Training" and it mentioned one of these were needed. What is so special about it? Why is it needed?

Some wifi cards prevent you from doing things like monitor mode listening and many more prevent packet injection because it can be turned into a security hazard. If you pick any old random wifi card, there is a good chance that injection is disabled on it. you'd be best to check first with the test function on aireplay-ng and if some of the functions return a failure, you'll need to buy a new wifi card.
