Do all web servers use SQL?

I had a question regarding web servers. I was wondering if all of them used SQL to manage the data? If they don't what are some other languages that are used in its place?--aka

The server and the database software are separate. As well as the language you use to interact with the database. I'm assuming you're talking about a standard server with Apache, MySQL and PHP or something like that. You can use any combination of the software available for each purpose as long as they're compatible.

Because you mentioned "to manage data", I'm assuming you are curious about databases. Not ALL servers utilize SQL databases. A list of some databases below:

- MYSQL
- Oracle
- Sybase
- DB2

You'll often see a standard web server setup referred to as LAMP which is acronym for Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.

However there are also Windows IIS servers which use IIS Webserver, MS Access and ASP.

For other data management and websites, some run entirely on JAVA and JDBC which can connect to any number of databases like Oracle or HSQLDB (HyperSQL Database).

Beyond these traditional setups, there many data management systems that make use of their own proprietary database systems including flat-file databases.

But by far and large the most often used system is LAMP, with IIS seeming to land a large share of corporate websites.

Those are all SQL based databases.

There has been a recent move towards NoSQL database systems such as:
  • Voldermort - Open source version of Amazons backend
  • Cassandra - Dynamo (amazon) and BigTable (google) hybrid open source DB
  • Hadoop HBase - Open source java based version of Google's BigTable
  • CouchDB - A REST based MVCC databases that uses Javascript Map-Reduce routines to query
  • MongoDB - A NoSQL DB that tries to be SQL like while remaining a document store
  • Reddis - A key value store database with an emphasis on performance
  • Riak - More of a mix of the previous three. Shitty Open-Core bussiness model
etc etc....

-1 for Thetan's info on NON-SQL. +10 for being just hot as hell. Have you guys seen Thetan's pictures? It gets my dick harder than Viagra.

Cassandra was initially developed by Facebook and they still use it to date. Now it's being used by Digg, Twitter, Reddit and more.

Obviously Amazon is using their Proprietary Dynamo (closed source ver of Voldermort).

I use CouchDB and MongoDB at work. UbuntuONE cloud based synchronization service is all CouchDB based.

Do a quick search on github for any of the mentioned NoSQL DBs and you'll get pages of projects in return that use them.

I don't expect to many users here to even be familiar with them. Then again, most users here are complete failures at even SQL.

I honestly have no opinion either way. I barely touch SQL but I found this hilarious though:

No srsly though. One isn't better then the other. They simply serve different niches.
