Bitcoin help

I was wondering if someone would explain to me what bitcoins are exactly? how to get a hold of them. what i can use them for? how do i keep track of them etc,etc....basically a run down on them. I have googled it and i still don't quite understand how they actually work or what they work with that. some of the stuff i have come across seems a bit sketchy. i.e. needed bank account numbers to purchase them, etc. so any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

To keep it simple:
Its basically a form of online currency.
You generally store it in a electronic wallet.
You take care of it yourself so your bank or what have you wont know what your purchasing.
It's private.
And it's pretty pricy for a single bit coin. something like £30 for 1 bitcoin,
