I have a question:
What are the differences between connecting the ftp server using ftp or using telnet on port 21/2121 (instead of 23)?
Are there any security issues involved?

the difference is that the FTP client can actually transfer files, as it understands FTP. Telnet can read and write to the FTP server fine, but when it receives FTP information, it only displays them on your screen and does not handle them in any special way. Read: it can't transfer files.

There are security issues with telnet I know, FTP I don't know about. A good alternative to telnet is ssh though.
