Seeing Through Webcams and Listening Through Mic's

Hey,

This is going to sound really dodgy, but I was wondering if it's possible to 'hack' into your other computer's webcam and/or mic? The reason I want to do this is because I go to boarding school, I have a desktop and a laptop. The desktop stays in my dorm and the laptop I use in lessons. Recently I have noticed that someone has been touching, moving around and stealing my stuff, what I wanted to do is from school (which has a WiFi network) look through my webcam while I'm in lessons?

If this is possible then please shoot me a PM or reply on the thread.

Thanks,
-Ollie

First off, this sounds a bit shady to me. I know it is perfectly possible that all this is true, but it can be easily used illegally or immorally.

Honestly if you spent 10 seconds on google, you can easily find a solution. Setup a webcam monitor, connect to the port from another computer, and bam live feed. Don't get me wrong its a lot more than that, but take the short amount of time it takes to setup, and hopefully you make sure its secure, so others don't sniff out that open port.
Two rules:
1. I am never wrong.
2. If proven wrong, refer back to rule 1.

Maybe try some software like logmein. Using something like that maybe your best bet if you don't know how to set up port-forwarding.

I have looked into loads of software that would allow me to do that, but almost none of them are free and the ones that are, are terrible. I have looked into and tried every option. I found one that worked, but the school blocked it from working in school.

Is there no other way of doing it?

Team-viewer is free, and if left your webcam on, could easily work for you.

Why not just get a lock on your dorm room door?

Yeah, any remote desktop access program would work nice and would be secure. Logmein or crossloop would do just fine. Just make sure you set everything up before you leave the room. You could also just set your cam to record while your out and then just skim through the footage when you get back.

I put one into the door myself, but the teacher told the janitor to take it out.

I swear programs like TeamViewer only allow you to see your screen.

Yes there are about a thousand programs to do this (live feed) and you are correct, they are either not free or are garbage. What I suggest is you ditch the live feed. It just isn't necessary and for your purposes unless you have all day to review recorded feed or the ability to watch nonstop. Live feed it isn't worth the effort through a webcam.

What you want is motion detection with adjustable sensitive activation which takes pictures. Again there are ton of programs that are available for this and are generally specific for the OS. So you will need to head back to google and find what meets your needs. This is better for you for several reasons. You won't need a big hard drive or put in that much time to ensure you have eyes on. You can have the pictures automatically sent via FTP or directly to your email (it's even possible to go directly to your phone). When the camera is activated you can select how often pictures are taken, like once every 5 seconds or 2 min, etc. So if someone is in your room, that shouldn't be in there you will still know.

I suggest Vitamin D Video. I have used it and I was satisfied. It's free, and it supports motion detection.
