Getting Started

I want to learn more about hacking. Or 'penetration testing' or 'ethical hacking' or whatever you guys wanna call it. I know a bit about software I should use and all that, and I know enough about computers to not be a total idiot. But I think that before I end up doing something incredibly stupid, I should start by reading up on this subject.

Do you guys have any ebooks or something you'd recommend I read? I know this site will certainly help, but if I just work at it without trying to understand what I'm doing I'll end up being some retarded script kiddie.

Hah. I was just looking at that one. I'm just sort of wary of it because of the title 'how to become a hacker'. That just seems like a sort of... childish title. I mean, it sounds like something that would be asked on Yahoo answers, you know? But I'll still check it out.

That's understandable, as the word 'hacker' probably brought up images of what the media as portrayed as a 'hacker'. It is a very abused term.

Hey, thanks a lot guys. This is really good stuff. It'll help me get motivated a bit more to learn programming again. I started with Python a while ago, but forgot a lot of useful info...

Of course, just reading about this kind of stuff is only half of what someone really needs to do to get into this type of thing. This site is really great, but are there others like it? I'm talking about simulation sites or servers that could help me get the logic part of hacking without having to know anything (or much) about programming.
