hackers/programmers communication program

Hey, I just recently started to learn things about programming like, python language, and HTML language. I was wondering if there is a instant messenger chat program for hackers. kinda like there is Xfire for gamers, and there is yahoo messenger for friends to communicate fast and easily.

We give our messages to the nearest pidgin, and hope to god it goes to the recipient (props if you caught the IM client reference in that sentence).

Ehhhh specific to hackers? Not that I'm aware of. I personally use a php-based IM system hosted on my own servers for private convos, but some people prefer AIM, gTalk, IRC...
