This better be more realistic than hollywood.

Haha, don't worry, this will be more realistic than things I've done (once I found a tarball of a site's sourcecode without even trying because they were using an outdated link that led right to it).

The idea of limited attempts is a bit unfair, but I would definitely try to make it so that you only get a certain flat-rate points after a certain number of attempts, whereas a lower number of attempts will get you more points.

The problem with that is that I would have to lock challenges down after completion, or generate everything randomly.

I don't like that guessing idea for the brute force thing-whatever it is.

The attempts idea has its merits, but I think my time idea is better. It appears many of you misunderstood what I meant.

The user will not be shown a clock. He/she has infinite time to complete the challenge. However, if the challenge is completed within X minutes, you get 100 points, anytime between X and Y you score 75, and anytime beyond Y you get 50.

Both X and Y will be determined from the average time a user takes to complete the challenge.

No, I completely understood your time idea, but I still think it sucks. It doesn't matter how fast bt how WELL you solve a problem. That should be what counts. Of course, a programming challenge like on this site you of course have to make a program that goes fast enough to beat it.

We understand perfectly. It's just a bad idea. They're supposed to be learning, not racing.

Well, the real problem I want to solve is that everyone who completes a challenge gets a flat score, so all of the people who have finished the game will have the same score, leaving no room for ranking.

Of course, I could provide things to do outside of the game that would get you points, such as HTS does...

It should be that way...it shows who has completed the challenge.
