SMS attacks

I was reading about SMS protocol being used to hack iPhones and other mobile devices but the articles were from 2009. Do SMS attacks still work or have all the vulnerabilities that made them possible in the past been patched up?

I'm sure the holes have been patched since then, but that's not to say that new ones haven't cropped up.
