([msg=73780]see valentine's day is gay...(no, really)[/msg])
and i'm not saying that because i'm single and bitter...
valentine's day originated as lupercalia, a roman fertility and purification festival (lupercus was the roman god of shepherds and the people thought that supplicating for his favor would bring spring sooner) this entailed the typical elements of sacrifice, feasting, and general merrymaking, but the climax of the festival was as such: \
the roman authorities would round up young boys--like 9 years and younger, strip them naked, tie paper "cards" around their waists, and have them run through the crowds in the streets. the men would then attempt to claim one of the cards as the kids ran past, and if he was successful, his reward was to "spend the evening with him" ...aaannnnd i'm sure you can guess the rest...
and that, ladies and gentlemen, is where modern western society got the tradition of sending little love notes to each other on the so-called st. valentine's day...enjoy your day!
peace and blessings
