Accessing home computers without VPN

Hello everyone, I wanted to find out if anyone knows if it is actually possible to remotely connect to a server, or other computer, that is sitting on a home network. The computers are connected to a router using a typical 192.168.1.X addressing scheme. I'm pretty sure it could be done using software that would make an outbound connection, but is it actually possible to alter the destination IP address after passing through the modem and router to the computers without a VPN router?

Google the following:

Port Forwarding
SSH
RDC / RDP
Assume that everything I say is or could be a lie.

Thanks, I appreciate the leads. Meanwhile, I found this thread http://www.hackthissite.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=10129&start=0&hilit=router&sid=5eff715e8ba2d835bd1c2294fb4d82fa which talks about a few secuirty holes that home routers can be affected by. One step closer to accessing machines that are connected...

And of course you mean you are only doing this on your own machines. Not someone else's. Which would be illegal. And bad. Mmkay?

If I wanted to connect to another one of my computers, I would probably set up OpenSSH and validate auth using RSA key pairs.

Sounds good. I've found myself away from home occasionally and needed various files from home with no way to access my computer. I've had coworkers of mine tell me " you're a computer guy, just remote in like they do on TV". I just shake my head in disbelief, knowing its not that easy.

It's really not that complicated to tunnel to your computer remotely if you use the right tools.
