So I'm getting gentoo?

hey guys! a long time friend of mine/only real life linux nerd i know, has /discussed with me some of the choices when it comes to picking a unix OS. after much deliberation and debating what i really needed, we both decided i would be getting gentoo linux.

my question (because i honestly have no idea), is what architecture should i be using?
I came across http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml and have no idea which of the following to use: alpha, amd64, arm, hppa, ia64, ppc, s390, sh, sparc, or x86.

any insight?

you probably have one of x86 or amd64, unless you have an older mac, or if you have some other odd machine. you probably want amd64 if your machine is fairly new, otherwise x86. if you post your processor model somebody can probably tell you, or if you're on Windows just run CPU-Z which will give you lots of information on your processor/motherboard/ram.

if you run CPU-Z, look under 'instructions'. if you are on an intel processor and you see 'EMT64' you are running a 64bit capable processor, so get amd64. if you're on an athlon processor, look for 'x86-64'.

otoh, you can not bother with checking and safely use x86, but there are benefits to using amd64.

'Intel 64' == EMT64, so you can use the amd64 version. good luck!
