hacking newbie

Hey i'm not gonna lie i'm a noob, but i want to start getting into hacking because i love messing around and im getting a degree in IT and programming so i thought the best way to defend a computer is to know how people attack them.

But to the point. I am doing a project for my security concepts class on cain and abel, but like i said im a noob so i am not familiar with all the acronyms and such so i was wondering if i can float some questions and maybe get some help.

when using the wireless tab and after i scan for wireless signal i am unable to lock on to a signal and start capturing IVs.

i have the latest airPcap driver and installed....so what am i missing?

also is there any other general advice i need. apart from the sniffer and arp poisoning i am almost totally clueless. i have tried doing my own research and have watch and read several tutorials, but there are no good tutorials that give in-depth, detailed explanations with visual examples.

so any help is greatly appreciated.

Go over to hak5.org and watch some of the earlier series where they showed how to use Cain and Abel etc
