I literally cannot list all the ways this will help you. That's all I'll say.

The more ways you know how something works, the more you know how to break it. ;)

Fashizzle has a point. However, dealing with CISCO all day at my job, I say it is useless if you want to specialize in hacking.

I'm sure knowing a bit about Networking though would help him out, whether it is CISCO or not. Mind explaining the UNusefullness of CISCO, Monica?

I think that the introductory course might be helpful. They will probably require a book with a title to the effect of "Introduction to Network Fundamentals." I can't remember the title for sure but it was put out by Cisco. It's doubtful to me that it is any better than any other introduction to network book on the market.

Frankly, if I had time to do things again, I'd buy the book and not take the class; the main reason being is that most of the course material was parroted back to us via lectures in which the instructor would paraphrase the online material, itself copied directly from the book!

Another book I might recommend alongside that book (mentioned above) is the "TCP/IP Guide", a behemoth work available for free online.

In other words: If you feel more comfortable with the whole teacher telling you what to do thing, go for it. If you feel more comfortable learning by yourself, buy the book and start reading. :)
