I think that the introductory course might be helpful. They will probably require a book with a title to the effect of "Introduction to Network Fundamentals." I can't remember the title for sure but it was put out by Cisco. It's doubtful to me that it is any better than any other introduction to network book on the market.
Frankly, if I had time to do things again, I'd buy the book and not take the class; the main reason being is that most of the course material was parroted back to us via lectures in which the instructor would paraphrase the online material, itself copied directly from the book!
Another book I might recommend alongside that book (mentioned above) is the "TCP/IP Guide", a behemoth work available for free online.
