Few questions regarding the internet

What's the best way to setup a home network? Why should I care about BGP?

Few questions regarding the internet

I have a few questions regarding the internet

1. I have lived in Lithuania when i was little and i remember when i was able to download anything at speed of 10mbps
while my internet was only 1mbps. Now i live in Northern Ireland, i have 8mb internet connection, but when i try to download anything anywhere from the uk its always like 1-100kbps speed. I mean like i could download 10mbps anywhere from lithuania from any network.... the speed was amazing. and now with and apperently faster internet connection of 8mbps i can only use 100kb?

2. If i am downloading something at like 50-100kbps my internet connection slows down dramatically, i can fell it cause im playing a game lineage2 and when i start to download something its start to lagg.... i though i have 8mbps internet not 200kbps ......

Windows vista sp1
BT Broadband (using a wireless router BTHomeHub) 8mbps
Intel quad Q6600 2.40GHz
3 GB ram

English not great
Thanks
I think im in the right category to post this topic
Thanks again ^^

The answer to no.1 is the ISP. Its same here in the republic. I get 100 kbp/s when I actualy get 6 mbp/s. Im not completly sure why it shows that my speed is 100 kb it just says it is. But im pretty sure its because the ISP have started to moniter what we download, mainly music and movies. Sad I know.

Im not sure why you have so much lag for no.2, sorry.
Im off, last year of school and all, I had something longer but char limit fucked that up. So yeah, had a good run here. Thanks for the memories. Thanks to the staff and users.

Best regards, your posting whore,

I know what you mean! When in Poland on vacation, I would get insanely high speeds from torrents/etc , even when ports weren't properly configured. Here in the states, I can get at most 300 Kb/s from a 3M/B connection...

That'd be as useful as asking the US Gov't what secrets they have. :P

1. Do remember that it's bits and not bytes. The hypothetical transfer rate is 1/8 * speed, e.g. 8Mbit = 1MB. That is to say, the hypothetical transfer rate is 1MB/s. Of course, you mustn't forget the load of the server that you're connecting to... You may be one of several thousand people downloading from their server at one time.

2. Imagine the data that's being sent to you from the game server... Taking away even a small part of your bandwidth will cause hell to your latency.

Finally, my bandwidth is 16Mbits, (2MB/s), I can achieve this transfer rate when connecting to people on my local network. However, online, I generally download at 400KB/s, or 1.5MB/s on sites with a low load / high bandwidth.

Sorry if I haven't answered any of your questions the way you wanted ^^... Lineage 2 huh?... Gotta check that out ;P

Good luck mates,

Code2004 // Connor

P.S. You can also blame your ISP of course.
