Old methods of networking and connection

What's the best way to setup a home network? Why should I care about BGP?

Hello ,
I was watching "Undergruond" the movie about Julian Assange story , he used to connect to networks by connecting his computer with wires from his phone speaker ,
does anyone know what is the name of this methode ?

i don't know if this subject goes under communications or network because i'm new so i just put it there .

This sounds a lot like an old version of dial-up. I know modems existed that worked by calling a number and then putting the phone in a receiver connected to the computer. The system could then send and receive bits by using the speaker and the microphone of the phone.

It's a movie...cyberdrain is right, it would have to be dial up.
