I read about paranoid linux in Little Brother so I looked it up but http://paranoidlinux.org/ is down and this wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinfoil_Hat_Linux claims that it is no longer maintained. Is that the end of paranoid linux then? Wish I'd found out about is earlier cuz I'm a paranoid bastard and this is just the kinda OS I need.

Paranoid Linux is made up by the author, it never existed. Of course, when the nerds read about it in the book, some tried to make a paranoid linux distro, but it never been made.

It apparently got to some sort of alpha stage in development, but I've got no clue if it was ever available as a public download.

This is actually pretty cool. The only thing I had heard even remotely close to this prior to reading this thread was a 'paranoid' security setting available from the Mandrake installer long before it became Mandriva. Too bad they never took it any further, it might have been worth the effort.

I immediately thought of Anonym.OS but that seems a bit different and discontinued as well. You might have to roll your own os.

There were some tries to develop some sort of ParanoidLinux but this projects are long dead - the most "actual" (I think the last update was around October 2009) distribution is Privatix, a Ubuntu-based private project.

Since you guys seem interested in this, the Department of Defense recently released a Linux Distro called DoD LPS: Department of Defense Lightweight Portable Security.

The tenets of the distro are that it is quickly bootable, provides common encryption and privacy needs, and leaves absolutely no trace on the computer on which it was used.

For that reason, you can't mount local hard drives--at least, I haven't figured out how to yet.

They have an LPS public version which serves as the foundation for their private DoD version, much like Fedora and Red Hat. Check it out: http://spi.dod.mil/lipose.htm.
