Installing Programs on Mandriva 2010

I just started playing around with linux mainly Mandriva 2010 with KDE4. I have figured out how to install stuff that is a .rpm but i cannot figure out how to install anything else. I was trying to install Battle for wesnoth-1.6.5 but it needed cmake or another tool for installation, i choose cmake by randomly choosing and when i try and install it i am unable to. I require a compiler to install, i think. Does anyone one know how to manually install packages, i can't use the internet because the only internet i have is a rogers zte MF636 modem which does not work at the moment with my linux.

Thanks.

wow, mandriva's still around?!?!?!?!

Anyways, what kind of shitty distro doesn't ship with cmake and gcc!!?!??!?!

If you don't have an internet connection your somewhat fucked. Unless you can download gcc/cmake source packages (or even RPM's) on another machine and transfer then over the network or through some other media (cd's, usb drives, etc).

Basically with cmake and gcc you just execute the following commands:
Code: Select all
./configure (options here and only if it ships with a configuration script)
make
make install
make clean

and that's just about the gist of it

Be advised though that any given source package can rely on any variable amount of other packages, these are more commonly known as dependencies.

ya i use my laptop and school to download all the things that i find i need, i had already installed wvdial and the libstream and ppp packages but they were all rpm's which made life easy, then i downloaded cmake but couldn't figure out how to install it, thanks for the instructions.

once i figure out how to get my modem working things will go alot better, i hope.

Thanks
