Debian install strangeness

Hey guys, I have been trying to get Debian istalled on my primary notebook, and I have been running into some problems. The install goes smoothly with no errors, but when I boot up the system for the first time GNOME will not start. I just get this black screen that slowly gets brighter, and then turns white. My computer just freezes then. I can boot from a Debian live cd so I don't understand why it isn't working.

When you get to the white screen hit 'ctrl+alt+backspace'. This should get you to a command line prompt.
If that doesn't work, restore the backup xorg.conf and ask on the debian mailing list. If THAT doesn't work, install PC-BSD.
- make a backup of the xorg.conf found on your hard drive
- overwrite the xorg.conf on your hard drive with the xorg.conf on the live cd
- remove the live cd and reboot
