I was just trying to get some opinions on using UNIX on the same laptop with windows XP. . should i just get another laptop and learn UNIX on that or what???

Google "Dual boot Linux" to get some quick instructions. Otherwise use a Virtual Machine.

Another option is a LiveCD of a distro that catches your eye.
