openssl certificates http://www.rtfm.com/openssl-examples/

I'm trying to use the example client server code found at http://www.rtfm.com/openssl-examples/ however the example certificates expired long ago. I've been searching all over to find some commands to generate these same certificates (self signed) however nothing has worked for me. If someone could help me out with finding the short list of commands to generate the pem files that would be great.
