First and foremost, how are you supposed to launch an attack against someone if you can't specify their computer? The IP address in and of itself is just a number, but it's what enables attacking in the first place. And while you are right in saying "Its not possible at all to take control of a computer with just an i.p."

Its not possible at all to take control of a computer with just an i.p. The person would have to somehow download something from the person trying to take control of the computer. Knowing an i.p. doesn't do you any good.

Even port scanning for ports running vulnerable app.s is of little use unless you have the skills to set up shop on the computer you are scanning.

Very few people start out 'hacking'. They progress from one to the other. Usually by learning to snatch passfiles and decode them with JTR....I hope you at least know what that is.

The natural progression into hacking is from cracking. Very few people start out 'hacking'. They progress from one to the other.

Around here, "cracking" is viewed as reverse engineering. I am guessing you mean breaking into sites, but that's what we deal with here as well. The difference is that we focus on the technologies behind it as opposed to using tools. Where you would use something like Havij, we would favor a fine-grained SQL injection probe.

Usually by learning to snatch passfiles and decode them with JTR....I hope you at least know what that is.

Decoding and decrypting are not the same. You don't need JTR to decode something.
