Can you download it to a CD and run it like a program, or does it have to be dual booted? And if I were to download it alone, how would I boot the OS?

You can boot into it from a liveCD. In order to do so, you should burn the .iso file to a disk.

You can also put it on a flash drive and boot to it that way, which is a nice way to make changes/download stuff for it. Go for a flash drive >= 8gb
