iphone 4 for programming

So, I'm planning to get the iphone or something (anything, really, to replace my Nokia 3210). I was wondering if anyone has tried programming on a mobile device and wanted to know if it'd be easy/comfortable/efficient to code on it.

I'd like to see if I could get a gadget that would replace my laptop when I'm in bed getting some last minute work stuff done.

Is this a stupid idea?

You would need to root the iPhone I think.
I would buy something that is more open.

Yeah, Apple didn't like their devices being able to compile and run code, so they blocked it. Although I do know that an app called CodeToGo (or something similar) allows you to write your code, and then you can send it off to a remote computer which then processes the data returns the result of the program which you have written.

But in any other circumstance, Apple have screwed us in coding.

python can be installed (as well as rumors of Perl) on a jailbroken iPhone. Otherwise, if you go with an Android phone it should be relatively easy to set up for those interpreted languages. You can't really do C on a phone unless you just use ssh and do it on your desktop remotely.

Yeah python can be installed. But i searched forever to get a ported version of perl on my ipod. If anyone finds anything, seriously, let me know.

Ahh, this all sounds good enough for me. To tell you the truth, I just wanted the shiny new toy. I just needed something to justify my superficial needs. The carrier that sells the iPhones here in my country are offering a pretty good deal for small businesses like mine.

I've tried out a couple of code editors on my phone because it sounded like a cool idea to write code on the go, but turns out it's pretty "gay" as the kids would say these days. Doesn't really feel right typing with your thumbs and it takes forever to write a couple of lines.

I miss tactile buttons on phones; they felt so much better than the fancy sci-fi black magic wizard phones everyone has today.... I just thought you'd like to know about my hurt feelings as well.

I use python on my htc android phone. The new one also has a slide out qwerty keyboard to avoid any non tactile gayness issues.

If you try something like Windows phone, you can build whatever on you pc, and simulate how it will run on your phone and debug everything before you actually install it. You'll need to know XAML, but you can get stuff up and running fairly quick.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Maemo? Maemo devices offer remarkable support when it comes to in device programming. See for yourself at the Maemo web site.
I haven't tried it, but I have heard that you can run Ruby on Android.
I don't know much about IOS, have not tried it as yet.
