HTS Lectures Are Coming Back!

You read right!

A few of us have been talking, and we have decided it's about time we brought back the old HackThisSite lectures. We reached this decision in part because of the lack of - how should I put this? - intelligent discussion on the forums. We're going to teach you if we have to drag you screaming!

Alright, so how will this work? While the details are still being hammered out, the general flow will be like this:

  • Ideas for lectures are submitted
  • We read through and pick out the best
  • Lecture is prepared, date/time announced
  • Everyone gets on IRC (and probably Ventrilo as well)
  • ?????
  • LECTURE!

Random info blob:

It'll probably change a few times as we all get used to it, but overall the process should be fairly stable. For those of you who cannot make it, we will be recording all the lectures and be making them available for download/viewing (YouTube?) The reason for having both IRC and Vent is that we can have a bot read the lecture in IRC, then take questions in Vent. Also, you're able to save the logs in IRC for archive purposes, even if the Vent recording fails. We will most likely be muting the channels during the actual lecture, pausing occasionally for questions. We don't know how long it may take, but a ballpark estimate would be anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. We're aiming for maybe one lecture each month, then go from there.

So, seeing as we want to get the ball rolling, post some suggestions for lecture topics. Rules:

  • Must be legal in the U.S.
  • Keep it relatively simple for this first lecture
  • Lecture/process suggestions/questions ONLY (this will be enforced)
Alright, let's see what you've got!

HAIL!
Who will be tutoring? And is there any focus of the topics, or any topic connected to computer science can come up?

I think I'll be doing the first one. After that, probably Monica or sanddbox if I don't again. Might open it up to whoever wants to. We're still in the early planning. As for topics, pretty much any computer-related topic that is broad enough to devote a lecture to. We thought about an ethics lecture, but quickly dismissed it because it would get out of hand.

I agree.
One more question. What is the exact purpose of holding lectures? It is to give an overall understanding of a broader topic (like for example cryptography), or to give appliable knowledge of a very specific topic (like brute forcing an MD5 hash). Or somewhere in between?
Don't get me wrong, I welcome the idea.

Yes I wanted to ask the same question, and also do the lectures explain the topic in depth or just the basics of the topic and some understanding?

Lectures are intended to be more in-depth.

@Goatboy: I'll toss out some general things I'd like to learn more about.

  • Rooting a Linux Server
  • Penetration testing a website
  • Writing exploits

sandy is right here. We are trying to strike a balance between technical, practical, and interesting. Lecture topics should cover a range of difficulties, so we're going to have something for everyone. For the first one, I was thinking of talking about SSH and how it can be used (tunneling, access to Linux, etc). Again, practical, technical, and interesting.

Wait... This might be a little off topic but... What if an admin or mod from HTS dies? How would we know?

It would be posted in the news, unless one of the HTS staff murdered them for going off topic, then nobody talks.
Back on topic.
Forensics would be cool.

Edit:
Better run looks like sandy has your number!!

Seriously, we make an important announcement about the lectures coming back and that's all you can think of?
