Basic Mission 6

Post by limdis on Wed Jan 01, 2014 2:20 pm
([msg=78686]see Basic Mission 6[/msg])

Requirements:
Persistence, some general cryptography knowledge.

Your goal is decrypt Network Security Sam's password, which is conveniently provided. You also have access to the encryption script that he's using, though you cannot view it. There are couple of ways to do this mission and if you do not currently have any programming experience, this challenge is simple enough to do by hand. Play with the encryptor to get a feel for how it works. Take your time and you will figure this out.

*Additional hint: What is ASCII?*
Good luck!

Try encrypting 'aaaaaa' or '!!!!!!'. Then, look up what ASCII is and find an ASCII table.
The glass is neither half-full nor half-empty; it's merely twice as big as it needs to be.

Encrypt a few words. Encrypt some gibberish. Encrypt the same letter/number/symbol repeatedly. Look for patterns.
Take a guess! Work backwards. Try using pencil and paper.

(hopefully none of this is spoilery)

I figured out the encryption and reverse-engineered the provided password. When I enter what I assume to be the correct password into the encrypter, it produces the provided encrypted password. When I enter that same password into the box, it says it's incorrect. What's up with this contradiction? Don't need a hint, just need to know if I'm missing something.
