linux on a mac

Has anyone been able to install any linux distro on their mac?

More specifically the MBA

I have searched high and low, and it seems like all the solutions i have found do not work for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(I was not really sure if this should go into the software or hardware)

Its a macbook air 4,2

Ive seen the site from the link you posted.
The problem with that is i do not have a optical drive to try and boot from.

Ive gone through manual partitions and trying to dd the img directly onto both the flash drive and the partition
i have rEFIt installed and i can see the partition, however when i try to boot from it i get either "missing operating system" or "no bootable drive"

I've used everything from macrumors to the ubuntu site and nothing seems to work for me.
I'm considering just using virtualbox and calling it a day haha.

If booting from flash drives wont work you could try making a bootable sdcard if you have one laying around and a card reader on your mac.
If all else fails you can always just purchase an external optical drive, you can get one for about $15.
