For the REAL skinny on social engineering...

Please pick up the book authored by Kevin Mitnick. Its called the Art of Deception, he has some other ones too and they're very good. In The Art Of Deception he explains Social Engineering using real stories (names,etc. changed for obvious reasons). And please just do some research and know what Social Engineering is before you attempt to talk about it.

Social engineering is an exceptionally dangerous "tool" when one can use it correctly. Think how stupid some people are. The biggest vulnerability in security is generally the human. Why not exploit a system from its weakest link, rather than spending twice as long using a much longer method to get whatever you want?

Because it's easier to talk someone into opening a hole for you than to actually search for and exploit one yourself. The greatest security vulnerability is human stupidity.

Yeah I wouldn't say its the best thing ever written, but it is an exceptional introduction and it uses real stories to demonstrate Social Engineering.
